Following the publication of Kay Thompson’s beloved Eloise books, an original portrait of Eloise illustrated by Hilary Knight was displayed in The Plaza’s lobby opposite The Palm Court.

The portrait quickly became a beloved fixture of the hotel, connecting readers with the spirited young girl who lived on the “tippy-top floor” of The Plaza and captured the imaginations of children and adults alike.

But Eloise’s story at The Plaza was only just beginning.

The Great Eloise Mystery

On Thanksgiving night in 1960, after a dance attended by college students, the portrait vanished.

Despite efforts to locate it, the artwork was nowhere to be found. What had once been a cherished symbol of Eloise’s place within the hotel suddenly became one of The Plaza’s most enduring mysteries. Guests and staff alike wondered what had happened to the famous portrait, but for years its whereabouts remained unknown.

A Royal Visit Inspires a Return

The portrait’s absence might have become a permanent part of Plaza lore if not for an unexpected moment involving royalty.

During a visit to The Plaza, Princess Grace of Monaco was given a tour of the hotel by then General Manager Alphonse Salone, who was himself immortalized as a character in the Eloise books. During the tour, conversation turned to the missing portrait, inspiring the decision to bring Eloise back to her rightful place within the hotel.

A replacement portrait was commissioned and installed, ensuring that future generations of guests could once again encounter Eloise within the halls of The Plaza.
