A Broken Strap and a Hollywood Legend

Some of The Plaza’s most memorable stories were never planned.

On February 9, 1956, Marilyn Monroe arrived at the hotel alongside Laurence Olivier to promote their upcoming film, The Sleeping Prince, later released as The Prince and the Showgirl. The press conference, held in the space that is now The Terrace Room, was expected to generate headlines about one of Hollywood’s most anticipated productions. Instead, a moment no one could have anticipated ensured the event would be remembered for something entirely different.

During the event, one of the delicate shoulder straps on Monroe’s black dress broke, instantly capturing the attention of the assembled press. As photographers rushed to document the scene, Monroe reportedly responded with characteristic humor, asking, “Should I take off my coat?” What had been a routine film promotion quickly became the story everyone would remember.

The incident sparked speculation for years. Some believed it was simply an accident, while others suspected it had been orchestrated. Monroe herself denied those claims. Whatever the truth, the episode demonstrated the extraordinary fascination the public held for the actress and her ability to command attention wherever she appeared.

Today, The Terrace Room continues to host private events, but it also remains connected to one of The Plaza’s most memorable Hollywood stories. Visitors on The Plaza’s Historic Tour can view the location where Monroe’s headline-making press conference took place and uncover many of the fascinating moments, celebrated guests, and cultural milestones that have shaped the hotel’s history for more than a century
